The Institute of Aviation and Air Defense was established on March 1, 2010. The management and departments of the institute were staffed, and training with aviation and air defense specialists of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine began.

The predecessor of the institute was the Faculty for the Preparation of Operational-Tactical Level Specialists of the Air Force, established in 2000. This faculty, in turn, was founded based on the Kyiv Institute of Military Air Forces.

The Institute of Aviation and Air Defense is a structural unit of the National Defense University of Ukraine and is designated to train master's level officers for the operational and strategic levels in aviation and air defense of the Armed Forces, military formations of Ukraine, and other countries worldwide.

The Institute of Aviation and Air Defense functions as an educational, methodological, and scientific division, which structurally consists of management, scientific research department, and five departments: Air Force, Aviation, Air Defense Missile Forces, Radio Technical and Special Forces, Air Force Logistics.

The defined structure allows the institute to be a leading center covering all types of activities – educational, methodological, scientific, and scientific-technical, and it features structural formation with a complete cycle of training military professionals in aviation and air defense.

The main tasks of the Institute include:
  • Training specialists in the field, organizing and providing scientific and methodological support for all types of educational activities, independent work, practical training, conducting diagnostics of learning outcomes, nurturing and developing students, their certification, and quality management of higher education;
  • Training scientific and pedagogical personnel of the highest category (doctor of sciences, doctor of philosophy) in the specialty 255 "Armament and Military Equipment" for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations, as well as participating in the training of specialists in other specializations;
  • Scientific and methodological support for the organization, conduct, and quality management of the educational process, improving the methodological skills of the institute's management, scientific and pedagogical staff, and researchers, enhancing the methodology, forms, and technologies of all types of educational activities;
  • Organization and conduct of flight training for scientific and pedagogical staff, doctoral students, adjuncts, who hold positions of flight personnel and flight personnel trainees in aviation units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
  • Ensuring labor and military discipline in the structural units of the institute, combating corruption, promoting integrity, preventing crimes, and gross violations of military discipline;
  • Formation of moral and psychological leadership qualities in students necessary for military service, readiness to perform tasks under any circumstances;
  • Improvement of the material and technical base.

The quintessence of officer training at the Institute of Aviation and Air Defense became a trial by war. From the first hours of large-scale aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, instructors, students, and graduates of the institute defended the sky of our country, demonstrating excellent readiness for combat operations and displaying courage, bravery, and heroism, for which they were awarded state awards such as the title of Hero of Ukraine, orders, and medals.

Specialty - 253 "Military Management (by branches of the Armed Forces)".

  1. Combat employment, command and control of military units of anti-aircraft missile troops.
  2. Combat employment and management of operations of radio-technical troops.
  3. Combat employment, command and control of aviation military units.
  4. Combat employment, support of operations and command and control of unmanned aerial systems.

Specialty - 254 "Troop (Force) Support".

    Specializations:
  1. Organization of communications, automatization of control and radio-technical support.
  2. Employment and management of operations of logistic military units and establishments.
  3. Organization of aviation engineering support.
  4. Organization of operation, maintenance and repair of armaments and military equipment of anti-aircraft missile troops.
  5. Organization of maintenance and service of armaments and military equipment of radio-technical troops.
  6. Organization of aerodrome technical and engineer support.
